A good retractable awning will last many years in Ireland, but our damp, windy autumns and winters are where most avoidable wear happens. A few simple habits keep the fabric clean, the motor reliable and the arms working smoothly.

1. Never close the awning wet for long

If you retract the awning while the fabric is wet, open it again to dry as soon as the weather allows. Fabric that stays rolled up damp is the main cause of mildew spots and staining.

2. Keep it closed in strong wind

Awnings are designed for shade and light showers, not storms. Retract it when wind picks up and whenever you leave the house. A wind sensor does this automatically – if your awning doesn’t have one, it’s one of the most worthwhile upgrades.

3. Clean the fabric gently

  • Brush off dry dirt and leaves with a soft brush.
  • Wash with lukewarm water and mild soap – no bleach or solvents.
  • Rinse well and let it dry fully extended.
  • Avoid pressure washers, which can damage the water-repellent finish.

Fabric type makes a difference to how easy this is – our awning fabrics guide explains the options.

4. Check the arms and brackets once a year

Look for loose fixings, corrosion around brackets and any change in how the arms fold. Wipe the aluminium with a damp cloth to remove salt and grime – especially near the coast.

5. Keep winter use sensible

A full cassette awning protects the fabric in its aluminium box, so it’s fine to leave it on the wall over winter. Avoid opening it in frost, snow or heavy rain where water can pool on the fabric.

When to call a professional

If the motor hesitates, the awning doesn’t close evenly or a fabric seam has opened, get it checked before it gets worse. GardenZone supplies and services retractable awnings across Ireland and can advise on repairs, new fabrics and motor upgrades.
