A hot tub gets far more use in Ireland once it has a roof over it. Before you get quotes, plan these six things.

1. Ventilation

Hot tubs produce a lot of steam. A roof that opens – like the louvres of a bioclimatic pergola – lets it escape instead of dripping back down.

2. Rain and leaves

A closed roof keeps the cover clean and dry, so the tub is ready when you are.

3. Privacy

Roll-down side screens or fixed shutters block the view from neighbours without building a wall.

4. Lighting

LED lighting built into the frame is easiest to add during installation.

5. Footing

Posts can stand on the patio or on top of low retaining walls – check what is there before ordering.

6. Size

Allow space to walk around the tub and lift the cover.
