Anyone who has tried to enjoy a patio in Ireland knows the problem: sunshine at lunchtime, a shower at three, a cold breeze by evening. The roof you put over your outdoor space decides how often you can actually use it. Two systems that handle Irish weather well are the bioclimatic pergola and the retractable “flat” pergola.

Showers and sunny spells: rotating louvres

A bioclimatic pergola has a roof made of aluminium louvres that turn on a motor. In a sunny spell you open them for light and air; when the next shower arrives you close them in a few seconds and the rain is carried away through the gutters and posts. Angled louvres also let warm air escape on still summer days, which keeps the space comfortable.

  • Best for: hot tubs, outdoor kitchens and patios used every day
  • Strong point: complete control over sun, shade and rain
  • Good to know: a solid structure that suits windy, exposed gardens

GardenZone has a new drone video of one of these systems in action, and you can see more projects on their bioclimatic pergola page.

Long bright evenings: a retractable roof

A retractable pergola, such as the Pergola Flat, uses a waterproof fabric roof that slides open or closed. On a fine June evening you can open the whole roof to the sky; when the weather turns, it closes in seconds. It has a lighter, more minimal look, which many people prefer on smaller patios or next to modern houses.

  • Best for: patios where you want an open sky on good days
  • Strong point: fully open roof, light modern frame
  • Good to know: pair it with ZIP screens for wind and privacy

Wind and cold: add glass

The roof keeps the rain off, but in Ireland the wind is often the bigger issue. Sliding glass walls, frameless or framed, turn either pergola into a garden room you can use from spring to late autumn. For pubs and cafés, glass wind barriers do a similar job for beer gardens. See the options on the glass enclosures page.

Which one should you choose?

If you want the most control and plan to use the space every day, a bioclimatic pergola is hard to beat. If you love an open sky and a lighter look, a retractable roof is a great fit. Either way, the best results come from a made-to-measure system and a proper site survey. GardenZone in Virginia, Co. Cavan supplies and fits both across Ireland.
