If you have a pergola or a covered patio, sooner or later you start thinking about the sides. The roof keeps the rain off, but the wind, the low evening sun and the neighbours all come in from the side. The usual answer is some kind of outdoor blind – and the choice is mostly between a standard roller blind and a ZIP screen.

The difference is in the edges

A standard outdoor roller blind hangs free or runs on two steel cables. It works, but in a breeze it moves, it flaps and it can bang against the posts. A ZIP screen has a zip edge sewn into both sides of the fabric, and that zip runs inside an aluminium side guide. The fabric is held along its full height, so it stays taut and quiet even when the wind picks up.

That closed edge has a second benefit people don't expect: with the screen down there's no gap at the sides, so midges and flies stay out. On a summer evening in Ireland that alone can make a pergola usable.

Where a simple blind is still fine

For a small, sheltered balcony or a terrace that rarely gets wind, a cable-guided drop-down blind is a lighter and simpler option. For an open pergola, a garden in the countryside or anywhere near the coast, a ZIP screen is the safer choice.

ZIP screens on pergolas

Most ZIP screens we see in Irish gardens go onto pergolas – retractable pergolas with a fabric roof and bioclimatic pergolas with louvres. On the louvred pergola below, in Co. Meath, a ZIP screen closes one side and sliding louvred shutters close the other.

Screens are motorised, so you lower them from a remote, a wall switch or your phone, and a wind or sun sensor can do it for you. Fabrics range from see-through screen fabric that cuts glare and heat to full blackout for privacy.
